PAVE the Way to Successful Communication
Matt Baron has shared this program with high school groups, college classes, and adults generally. Drawing on his decades as a journalist and 25 years as a self-employed business owner, he anchors the session around the PAVE principles that he created over 20 years ago:
- Practice active silence — be a sincere audience
- Ask engaging questions — find out what makes people tick
- Value all people — everyone has a story to share
- Expand your comfort zone — you may be surprised by what you learn
Among other takeaways, attendees recognize the importance of focusing on their end goals—not getting bogged down in their fears and doubts about the process. Each person is challenged to create a time-sensitive next-step goal and identify a trusted individual to serve as their accountability partner.
